Tales from the Stand–Part the first
Once again, I will be starting another series. This one is inspired by my work as a freelance lifeguard at a local aquatics facility and by the things I observe and the conversations I hear.
1. The other day I was guarding for lessons. This particular lesson had a total of two 3 year old girls. At one point, one of the girls exclaimed rather urgently, while tapping the arm of the other girl, “Umbrella! Umbrella! Watch.” I glanced around to see if one of the umbrellas on a lifeguard stand had been lifted by the wind into the water or something. Nope. I looked back to the girls in the lesson and realized that the first girl was just trying to get her friend’s attention; her friend who was named “Gabriella.”
2. Today, I was once again guarding for a lesson, this time there was only one 3 year old girl. The swim instructor was trying to make conversation with the girl and asked if she was in school. Teeth chattering, the girl nodded her head yes. The swim instructor then asked the girl what is her favorite subject. In all earnest sincerity, the little girl answered, “Dressing up like a princess.”
Priceless.
