Savvy Mav Tip #39: Try Priceline.com

Enough about curtains!  This is one of my recent and absolute favorite Savvy Mav tips.  This week I was working on booking a coast-to-coast flight that wouldn’t completely send me into the oblivion of debt.  I tried looking up an old voucher I had for $100 and found that it expired just two weeks ago: awesome :(   Then I tried to see if I had enough miles for a free ticket and I swear every time I get close to the amount you need for a ticket, they change the rules and up the ante.  Its all a conspiracy.
Savvy Mav = Happy Mav

Well on my way to Wit’s End, I decided to try out Priceline.com–you know the famous website where you can “name your own price” and “save hundreds of dollars.”  Yeah well, I’m a skeptic.  I’ve tried it before with zero success.  Nevertheless, I was desperate for a deal so I put in my dates and destinations and my ridiculously low proposed sum of $300.  Yeah, I know, who flies across all four timezones for $300 these days?  But hey, it doesn’t hurt to try right.  It took a few minutes to process and I was expecting to see something like, “We’re sorry, your offer has been declined.  Goodbye.”  Instead I saw, “If you’re willing to fly out of a different airport (which is still only 45min) we can give you the flight for $365.00.”  Um…YES PLEASE!

Now the thing about Priceline.com is that you don’t get to select your times or airline, its kind of a gamble.  But if you’re flexible and looking for a great deal, this is the place for you.  I was definitely looking for a deal and so I was willing to be flexible.  I also was aware that I could be signing myself up for a spot in a cargo plane for that cheap of a ticket!

Feeling bold, adventurous, and without the funds to be at all picky, I took the plunge and accepted the price.  And this is what was behind door #1: Coast to coast flight…non-stop service…on Virgin airlines…at Christmas…for $365.00 = Victory!

So check it out my friends and Happy Savvy Traveling!
