Poem [untitled]
Mi poema, es su poema
I am your voice
you are my ears
I am your heart
you are my soul
I am your eyes
you are my vision
I am your song
you are my lyrics
I am your rap
you are my rhythm
I am your courage
you are my strength
I am your broken heart
you are my bandage
mi esperanza, es su esperanza
The lines I write
don’t belong
to me
or to you
The songs he sings
don’t belong
to him
or to her
The story they tell
doesn’t belong
to them
or to those
But it is
our poem
our song
our story
Because this life I’m in
does not just belong to me
it is a part of all of us
and we are a part of each other
For you see,
the pain you feel?
I’ve felt it too.
the love I long for?
you’ve sought too.
the questions you ask?
I’ve wondered too.
the truth I seek?
you’re searching too.
So I give sound to my story
and volume to my voice
not just for myself
for my own accolade
But when I step up to this mic
I tell your story
just like you tell mine
because,
“The story of one of us, is in some way, the story of all of us.”*
