Is it Just me? Part II
1. Over the last few years I’ve encountered some of the most peculiar cuisine combinations offered at various dining establishments here around SoCal. I mean, I get Pie n’ Burger that just makes sense. But I’m talking about places like, “Fair Oaks Burger: Chinese and Mexican Cuisine.” Do they even sell burgers? And lets not overlook the ever popular Donuts and…well, pretty much anything else under the sun!
The other day, I discovered this great little Mediterranean joint (as advertised on the outside) which was perfect because I needed some baklava to finish off a “celebrate all things Israel” dinner with a friend and when I walked in, the menu and neon signs all glowed Smokin’ Jack’s Kansas City BBQ !?! I looked quizzically at the man behind the counter (of neither Israeli nor Kansasian descent) and asked if this was a pita pocket or a bbq joint and he smiled impishly declaring, “Both!…*wink*”
Right. Of course. How silly of me. Is it just me or is anyone else amused/confused by the virtually endless array of odd mis-marriages of food choices?
2. Is it just me or is anyone else revolted by the chocolate chip cookie who tries to seduce a buxom blond human in Chips a’Hoy commercials…blech! This is right up there with the cross-phyla air freshener ads.
3. I saw this preview for a new TV series…an epic fantasy tale, takes place in New Zealand, great costumes and a handsome hero. I was thinking of being interested, I mean I LOVED LOTR so this could be interesting. That is, of course, until I heard some of the dialogue. Is it just me or is anyone else put off when movies or shows portraying other eras or cultures have actors speaking in a regular old American accent?

I believe in the philosophy that you should try to do one thing and then do it really well… it definitely fits for the restaurants you metioned.

How could anyone think of not using authentic accents for something set in New Zealand? That accent’s “like butta.” A Kiwi could read the phone book to me any day!

The restaurant fusion thing is interesting, I agree. I’ve encountered some good ones though, such as Guido McNeal’s in Middletown, PA where you can get bangers ‘n mash with a Guiness OR canneloni al forni and a glass of chianti. Then there’s Tomatoes in Hewitt, TX where I’ve had El Presidente (an enchilada plate) on one occasion and Shrimp Florentine with Angel Hair on another.
Haven’t seen the Chips Ahoy ad, but I did see an ad for M&Ms Premium where the Green M&M does this sultry act, then at the end all the other (male) M&Ms are gaping at her, jaws on the floor. I wasn’t sure if it was funny or revolting, but I’m leaning towards the latter.
And yes, for some reason, those kind of movies just need to have actors with British accents.
