Air Travel: The New Dating Scene?

Once upon a time I was a member of an online dating service.  This endeavor resulted in 1 lame date, and countless realizations that I totally just paid for amusing stories to tell at dinner parties rather than affording me the opportunity to meet the love of my life.  Despite the fact that I am no longer a member or user of the site, I still get periodic newsletters with horrible dating and relationship advice.  Today’s newsletter included this gem of an ad:

Air New Zealand Announces First Matchmaking Flight!
Have you ever noticed how many attractive people you see while traveling?
Brought to you by our Sponsor, Air New Zealand

But then again, I guess they do make a valid point about all those attractive people you see…I guess it wouldn’t hurt to see what all the fuss is about right?  here’s what the “advice” article had to say about this fab new opportunity:

Perhaps it’s time to consider flying as a new dating tool! Air New Zealand is here to help you do just that. This month, Air New Zealand announced the world’s first Matchmaking Flight, which will depart Los Angeles International Airport for Auckland, New Zealand, on October 13, 2009. The airline will fly U.S. singles to the opposite side of the Pacific to help them find potential dates in air or on land in Auckland.

Passengers who sign up for the Matchmaking Flight will be immersed in a full dating experience. Along with a flight full of themed food, drinks, games and entertainment, passengers will enjoy a pre-flight gate party and singles-only party at the SKYCITY Convention Centre once they’ve arrived in Auckland.   Roundtrip ticket prices start at $780 (USD).

As you’re preparing for the flight of a lifetime, here a few tips to keep in mind:

  • Singles can create an online profile on the site to connect with other passengers and get a head start on flirting.
  • Pretend you are speed-dating and strike up a conversation with everyone you meet. You never know who you might hit it off with.
  • Although your adrenaline may be rushing, try to get some sleep on the flight. No amount of concealer can cover the dark circles that will develop after 24 hours of chatting up fellow singles.

I’m still left to ponder: IS love in the air?
